Guardrail review (Phase 1)

Date: 2026-10-10 Reviewers: (1) an independent general-purpose subagent that had not seen the build session, asked only to break the guardrails in a temporary clone; (2) the engineering lead’s engineering:code-review pass over the full Phase 1 diff. Scope: .claude/hooks/*.py, .claude/settings.json, reviewer subagent frontmatter, scripts/check_guardrails.py. Code reviewed: branch phase-01-foundations at d812b40. guard.py was unchanged up to d3063e6. Fixes landed in 6cdb589.

Method (adversarial reviewer)

The reviewer cloned the repository into a temporary folder. In the clone it created a prereg-v1 tag, committed tests/golden/expected.csv and docs/prereg/addendum-v1.md, and created untracked data/ and results/ files. It then fed about 150 crafted hook-JSON payloads to the clone’s guard.py with the real venv interpreter (CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR = clone). No attack command was executed; each was only passed as stdin data. The real repository was read-only, and the temp folder was removed afterwards.

Findings and status

ID

Source

Finding (attack)

Severity

Status

Evidence

R-NL

adversarial

--reviewer-bash allowed uv run pytest\ncat ~/.ssh/id_rsa: the regex \s+ matched newlines, so text after a newline passed as pytest arguments

critical

Fixed

Reviewer mode now rejects \n \r ; & | < > $ \`` and tokenises; tests/test_guard.py::test_reviewer_cannot_escape`

R-WITH

adversarial

uv run --with=evilpkg pytest allowed (installs and runs arbitrary PyPI code)

critical

Fixed

Only --no-sync --frozen --locked --offline -q --quiet allowed as uv flags; same test

R-PLUG

adversarial

pytest -p mod, --pyargs, -c file, -o/--override-ini allowed (load arbitrary code or config)

high

Fixed

Pytest options whitelisted to test selection (-q -x -k -m --tb -r…, safe in-repo paths); --basetemp, /abs and ../ paths rejected; same test

G-GLOB

adversarial

Shell writes via docs/PRE*.md, docs/P?EREG.md, docs/[P]REREG.md, docs/'PRE'REG.md, docs/PRE''REG.md, tests/gol*/… escaped the substring lock check

medium

Fixed (variables remain residual)

Quotes stripped before matching; glob and brace patterns matched with fnmatch against the locked-file list, cwd-relative and by basename; test_glob_or_quoted_write_to_locked_file_blocked (12 cases)

D-UIX

adversarial

git update-index --add data/raw.bin and --cacheinfo …,data/raw.bin staged data

medium

Fixed

update-index paths checked (incl. the mode, sha, path form); --index-info/--stdin blocked; test_plumbing_staging_of_data_blocked

C-COMMIT

adversarial

git commit data/raw.bin -m x not inspected

low

Fixed

Commit pathspecs checked (message options skipped); test_plumbing_staging_of_data_blocked; tests/test_repo_invariants.py also fails if data is tracked

S-KEY

adversarial

Read deny missed id_rsa, credential files and .env outside the project

low

Fixed (partly residual)

Added Read(**/id_rsa), id_ecdsa, id_ed25519, *.p12, *.pfx, .netrc, .git-credentials, ~/.ssh/**, ~/.aws/**, ~/.config/gh/**, //**/.env, //**/.env.*; settings re-validated against the published schema. Scripts that open files themselves are not covered by Read rules (ADR-0001 residual risk)

T-UNK

adversarial

An unknown edit tool name (MultiEdit) on a locked file was allowed

info

Fixed

Any tool whose name contains Edit/Write and carries file_path/notebook_path goes through the file check; content unknown means block if locked; test_git_internals_settings_and_unknown_edit_tools_blocked

U-ADD

adversarial

git add of a path that does not exist is blocked because the dry run fails

info

Accepted (fail-closed by design)

The real git add fails too; noted as a usability cost in ADR-0001

CR-1

code review

uv run <cmd> / uvx <tool> hid the real command (e.g. uv run git push --force, uv run rm -rf src)

high

Fixed

Treated as wrappers, including their value-taking options; test_wrapped_or_dynamic_commands_blocked

CR-2

code review

(git push -f), { git push -f; }, PowerShell & { … } and shell function headers hid commands

high

Fixed

Grouping characters stripped from tokens (the {} placeholder of find/xargs kept); same tests

CR-3

code review

Git aliases (alias.fp = push --force, !git push -f, inline -c alias.x=…) hid destructive pushes

high

Fixed

Unknown subcommands resolved through inline -c alias.* and git config --get alias.*; shell aliases evaluated as shell; test_git_alias_force_push_blocked

CR-4

code review

Dynamic command names ($(echo git) push -f, $G push -f)

medium

Fixed

Blocked when the segment touches a protected operation; same tests

CR-5

code review

Lock tags or refs could be edited directly inside .git/ (rm .git/refs/tags/prereg-v1, Write to .git/...)

high

Fixed

Edit/Write inside .git/ blocked; non-read-only shell commands mentioning .git/ blocked; test_git_internals_settings_and_unknown_edit_tools_blocked

CR-6

code review

.claude/settings.local.json or ~/.claude/settings.json could be written with disableAllHooks

high

Fixed

Settings files other than the shared .claude/settings.json (which an ask rule gates) blocked for Edit/Write; shell writes mentioning .claude/settings*, .claude/hooks/ or .claude/agents/ blocked

CR-7

code review

PowerShell (New-Object Net.WebClient).DownloadFile(...) and python -m pip download <url> bypassed the download allowlist

medium

Fixed

Network hints (WebClient, DownloadFile, HttpClient, urlretrieve, …) and any Python command carrying a URL are host-checked; test_other_download_routes_blocked

CR-8

code review

pytest --basetemp=src empties a project folder

medium

Fixed

--basetemp treated as a recursive delete target (allowed only in temp); test_wrapped_or_dynamic_commands_blocked, test_pytest_basetemp_in_temp_allowed

CR-9

live use

False positive: uvx check-jsonschema … .claude/settings.json blocked by the new internal-path rule

info

Fixed

uvx unwrapped; check-jsonschema read-only; test_settings_schema_validation_allowed (an unknown uvx tool on settings is still blocked)

CR-10

live use

False positive: cd … && git commit -m "…" mentioning .git/ blocked (cd was not read-only)

info

Fixed

cd family read-only; test_cd_with_read_only_or_commit_allowed

CR-11

live use

False positive: > inside a quoted commit message (<noreply@…>) read as a redirection

info

Fixed

Redirection searched outside quotes only; echo x > "docs/PREREG.md" still blocked (test_redirect_to_quoted_locked_path_blocked)

CR-12

check_guardrails

Bash(curl *) and Bash(wget *) ask rules lacked exact PowerShell twins

low

Fixed

Twins added; scenario 4 of scripts/check_guardrails.py

Residual risks (not fixable in a hook, or accepted) are listed in ADR-0001, “Residual risks”.

Correctly blocked (coverage audit, from the adversarial report)

  • Tool path locks: Edit, Write and NotebookEdit with changed content, replace_all and unknown old_string; CRLF-identical and byte-identical writes correctly allowed; docs/../docs/PREREG.md, docs//PREREG.md, ./docs/PREREG.md, docs\PREREG.md, DOCS/PREREG.MD, padded and absolute paths.

  • Plain shell writes: sed -i, cp, mv, tee, >/>>, python -c open(w), install, dd, ln -sf, truncate, awk >, patch, : >, cd docs && …, subshells, git checkout/restore/rm/mv of PREREG, PowerShell Set-Content/Add-Content/Out-File; read-only commands allowed.

  • Tags: git tag -d/-f/--delete/-fd, git update-ref -d refs/tags/prereg-v1, git push origin :refs/tags/prereg-v1; benign tag operations allowed.

  • Pushes: +main, +refs/…, --force, -f, -uf, --force-with-lease, --force-if-includes, --mirror, --prune, --delete, :main, git -C . push -f, git -c x=y push -f, env/command/"git"/\git//usr/bin/git, bash -c, sh -c, eval, PowerShell iex and -EncodedCommand.

  • Data staging: git add data/…, -f, results, src data, git stage, --chmod=+x data/…, PowerShell variant; git add -A/./'*'/:/ blocked when .gitignore is removed, allowed when data is ignored.

  • Recursive deletes: rm -rf src, rm -r --no-preserve-root /, rm -rf .venv, rm -rf $HOME, find -delete, find -exec rm -rf {} +, git clean -fdx, Python shutil.rmtree/os.removedirs, xargs rm -rf, Remove-Item -Recurse, rd /s /q, ri -r; cache deletes allowed.

  • Downloads: unlisted hosts, lookalikes (pypi.org.evil.com, evil.com/pypi.org, user@pypi.org@evil.com), 169.254.169.254, uppercase schemes, $URL, scheme-less hosts, certutil, bitsadmin, scp, pip/uv install https://evil, Python urllib, iwr/irm.

  • Input handling: malformed, empty, 200 KB, non-UTF-8, wrong-type, deeply nested, 500-pipe and 5,000-label-URL inputs all returned 0 or 2, never 1 (no fail-open crash).

Live-guard observations

The active guard blocked several of the reviewer’s own commands, each for a stated reason:

  • writing into the real repo’s data/ (permission deny);

  • git add of not-yet-existing paths (dry-run fail-closed);

  • git -C "$C" add … (unresolvable variable).

Reading a dummy .env and id_rsa in the scratch folder succeeded before the S-KEY fix.

Verification after fixes (commit 6cdb589)

  • uv run pytest -q: 258 passed, including 52 regression tests for the findings above.

  • uv run python scripts/check_guardrails.py: 45/45 scenarios passed; guard latency median about 188 ms.

  • .claude/settings.json validates against https://json.schemastore.org/claude-code-settings.json.
